Interview with Deborah Reck, Founder, The Writers' Express

What is The Writers' Express?

The Writers' Express is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by two history teachers who have developed a uniquely engaging and effective way to teach writing and train teachers to teach writing. The organization runs writing programs, integrates writing workshops into other programs, and trains teachers and after-school staff.

Why is an organization like this so important?

People who write well are able to communicate their vision and reach their goals. Writing clearly and powerfully is an enormously satisfying way to connect to the world and the people in it. The planning and thinking skills that are essential to good writing are also essential for success in other academic and non-academic pursuits.

What types of programs or exercises do you do with the kids?

In our comprehensive programs, students participate in activities in athletics, in the arts, and in adventure. They write about all of their experiences in journals. Students work one-on-one and in small groups with writing instructors to improve skills and to develop their journal entries into stories and essays. Students read their own work to each other and read and discuss other authors as well.

Who is eligible?

The Writers' Express runs after-school and summer programs and provides tutoring for secondary school students (grades 5-12).   Organizations or schools that work with children can bring in The Writers' Express to add a writing component to their programs and/or to train their staff in writing instruction.

How can people learn more about The Writers' Express?

You can email info@writersexpress.org . We do use volunteers in the organization and in the programs.
