Immediate Impact, Lasting Transformation

The Writers’ Express is building its capacity to reach thousands more at-risk children and hundreds more teachers in urban school districts across the country.  You can help these struggling students in two primary ways:  through our Capacity Building Campaign or our Scholarship Fund. 

Capacity Building Campaign

The Writers' Express has a goal of raising $2 million in the next two years in order to reach 500,000 underserved students by 2011. Funds from the capacity building campaign will be used to:

1. Pay for trainers' salaries ahead of the signing of contracts. While WEX is paid by schools for its work, donor contributions support the training of teachers so that once a contract is signed, WEX can immediately start to provide professional development services.

2. Support WEX research and development. WEX curriculum developers are refining the final versions of instructional and training materials to maximize usability for educators . Donor support is essential to helping us prepare these materials.

3. Building capacity to train teachers and sell curriculum in key geographic regions. WEX is looking to expand in 4 key regions: Metro Boston, NYC, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Your contribution will support our goal of hiring senior trainers in these cities so that we can extend our reach and serve thousands more children over the next few years.

Scholarship Fund

WEX offers tuition assistance to two-thirds of the children who attend the Summer Program. At least one-third of these children is eligible for free or reduced lunch programs at their schools. In order that we may continue to provide scholarships to those most in need, we need your help.

Please consider contributing at one of the following levels:

• $5,000 Sponsors a summer writing group consisting of five children and one senior instructor
• $1,000 Pays for one full scholarship to a WEX Summer Program
• $500 Pays for a half scholarship to a WEX Summer Program
• $250 Sponsors a Junior Counselor for a week
