Simmons College – Academic Year 2008
Using Writing to Close the Achievement Gap.
The course is highly practical in nature. Class time will be devoted to looking at student writing and determining strategies for responding to writers at various levels. We will also commit a significant amount of time to modeling and discussing teaching strategies (for both expressive and technical writing skills) that excite children, ensure participation, and change children’s attitudes about writing and reading. Course participants will develop and practice techniques to use in the classroom right away. This course is most relevant for teachers of grade 3 through college and is a four-credit course.
General Informatiion
The course will meet over three weekends. In between meetings, students are expected to spend at least five hours practicing the methods in a classroom setting.
