WEX Dynamic Feedback System: Making Individualized Instruction Work
“The Writers’ Express™ has changed both the academic profile and self-image of fourteen of our students. The inner-city children in our program were targeted as our lowest-achieving fourth graders. In just three short months The Writers’ Express curriculum has turned these children into students who love to write, who no longer see themselves as 'bad students'.
Students write in their journals three times a week for ten uninterrupted minutes; teachers assign a targeted revision assignment at least once a week, and students write back the next day. This tight feedback cycle of practice-instruction-revision enables teachers to keep working with each student on a specific skill until he masters it.

Structured Practice
Daily low-stakes writing gives students the chance to work on specific skills — and gives teachers a clear snapshot of what each of their students can and can’t do. Teachers use the information they get from this quick “dipsticking” to assign each student a short individualized revision assignment that aims at working on the specific skill the student needs to master to get to the next stage.
Targeted Skill-Building
Teachers give each student exactly the help he needs, just when he needs it, in a form he can use immediately. And because they're focusing on just one skill at a time, teachers can craft their written comments more effectively in less time than when they try to correct everything.
Writing for Impact
Teachers learn to write comments that highlight what is most effective and powerful in their students' writing. This illuminates for students how they are able to make an impact as writers and gives them a reason to keep writing.
